About Us

The Suburban Mutual Fire Aid Association (SMFAA) is made up of numerous Fire and EMS departments in and around the City of Hazleton, Pennsylvania. Dispatch Services are provided by Luzerne County Communications Center, the Schuylkill County Communications Center, and the Carbon County Communications Center.

Our Mission

The Suburban Mutual Fire Aid Association was established to service the needs of Fire and EMS departments in the Southern Luzerne, Upper Schuylkill, and Upper Carbon Counties.

The purpose for the incorporation of the Suburban Mutual Fire Aid Association is to make available a structured system which enables an organizational member the ability to render assistance and support to other organizational members during incidents requiring emergency services.

SMFAA By-Laws and Rules of Order

Company Profile

The SMFAA is the unified framework for providing support and training at local and regional levels for its member departments, and any others wishing to participate. Our training programs operate year round, with courses being offered as needed. Most courses are offered at no cost or for cost recovery fees only. SMFAA works closely with the Pa State Fire Academy, Bucks County Community College, Luzerne County Community College, Schuylkill County Fire Training Center, and many other organizations to ensure that area fire fighters and fire officers are trained to state and federal skill and safety standards.

The goals of the SMFAA are to:

  • Encourage interaction between the member communities resulting in shared resources, greater co-operation and standardized operations

  • Recruit and train personnel who work in our communities to aggressively attack fires during the day and evenings.

  • Increase available personnel and equipment to provide increased safety and protection, Rapid Intervention Teams, outside Fire Fighter Tactical Reserves, and improved salvage operations.

  • Help design and implement retaining strategies for skilled, experienced, and trained firefighters.

  • Train fire officers and offer advanced firefighter training in Rapid Intervention Teams and other safety initiatives

  • Continue basic training programs, while improving officer and leadership programs

SMFAA welcomes all fire fighters, regardless of their locality to join our training activities.

This Association is intended to provide fire protection services efficiently, effectively, and safely through a co-operative and flexible approach. Ultimately, we hope to improve the level of public safety for all of those in need.
